Paediatric first aid certificates

What is a paediatric first aid certificate?

It is a certificate you are issued with once you have completed a paediatric first aid course. This course focuses on emergency scenarios that are faced by professionals, including nannies, looking after young children. A paediatric first aid course should meet the requirements of the Early Years foundation stage statutory framework and also meet Ofsted requirements for nannies under the Approved Carers Scheme.

What is the usual course content?

  • First aid kit
  • Action planning
  • Treatment of an unconscious casualty
  • Resuscitation
  • Choking
  • Asthma and diabetic emergencies
  • Head injuries
  • Seizures
  • Bleeding
  • Burns
  • Sprains, strains and fractures
  • Poisoning, bites and stings
  • Foreign objects
  • Childhood conditions (e.g. measles, meningitis, croup).
Why do nanny agencies and families require it?

A paediatric first aid certificate gives families the peace of mind that the nanny is capable of dealing with any emergencies or accidents involving their children. Nanny agencies believe it is important to only put nannies forward that are qualified in first aid on children. It is also a requirement if the family would like you to become Ofsted registered.

Can I start a nanny job offered to me through Forget-me-not nannies without one?

No. One of the reasons why families use a nanny agency to find them a nanny is so they know the nanny is capable of dealing with any emergencies or accidents involving their children. Forget me not nannies cannot allow nannies to start work with a family without a valid paediatric first aid certificate.
